On both the Medford and Lumberton Campus, you will find the native shrub Ilex verticillata, otherwise known as winterberry. This species of holly is native to eastern North America and is prized for its splash of brightly colored red berries, which are densely packed on its branches. The visibility of the berries is heightened when the foliage drops. The berry-laden branches provide a wonderful accent to flower arrangements as well as a delectable feast for birds. You can find these shrubs in the Community Building parking lot on the Medford Campus and on the Lumberton Campus near the parking lot for the Community Center. For a bird’s eye view of this particular shrub, just look outside the window as you pass by the Oak Room on the Medford Campus.
